Prevent Reherniation – Microdiscectomy with Barricaid
Have you been diagnosed with a lumbar disc herniation? This is sometimes called a:
- Herniated disc
- Slipped disc
- Bulging disc
- Pinched nerve
Herniated discs are injuries of the spine, occurring when softer disc material pushes out through a hole in the stronger outside wall. Herniated discs are the leading cause of neck, back, and leg pain, and usually occur between the ages of 30 to 50. Patients with a significant defect face up to a 30% risk of recurrent disc herniation. In fact, women under 50 are 10x more likely to reherniate.
A spine surgeon will typically recommend a straightforward procedure called a discectomy. The surgeon reaches the damaged disc from the back of the spine, through the muscles and bone. A portion of the damaged disc is removed but a hole is often left in the outer ring of the disc (annulus). If left untreated, the large hole may allow for a second disc herniation resulting in the return of symptoms and a greater chance of disability.

In 2021, Dr. Justin V. Bundy began offering an implant to close these large holes in the disc walls of his patients: the Barricaid. Augusta-Aiken Orthopedic Specialists is the only practice in the region to offer this state-of-the-art procedure to patients.
First offered in Europe, Australia, and Asia, Barricaid has been proven 95% effective in preventing reoperations for reherniation. Approved by the FDA in March 2020, the device has been implanted in approximately 8,500 patients worldwide. Dr. Bundy is among an elite group of surgeons who have been trained to perform this new technique.
